On this day 84 years ago...

The Dillinger Robbery took place at the Central National Bank in Greencastle, Indiana. Headed by gangste John Dillinger, the gang of four men successfully made off with about $20,000 in cash and bonds after entering the bank just prior to closing. This was far from the only heist this group pulled off; the Depression Era gangsters were responsible for over a dozen robberies across the Midwest in Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, and South Dakota. Dillinger was also infamous for escaping prison and a high profile court shoot-out. While his life was action-packed, it was also short. The FBI went to great strides to take him down, and successfully did on July 22, 1934 when he was only 31 years old. An odd fact about this daring criminal- he was an early adopter of plastic surgery, not to alter his appearance so as to allude authorities, but to improve his visage with fillers and cosmetic improvements. Even the toughest guys need a little confidence boost!
