The Brick Connection - LEGO at Comic-Con

The Brick Connection A novice Lego fan explores the great brick world of LEGO

What up nerds!

And I mean nerds in the best possible ways.

A very awesome and nerdy event happened this past weekend when San Diego Comic-Con (the comic-con of all comic-cons) was held July 21-24.

As a fan of scifi/fantasy/superhero movies and television shows, I love comic-con for the panels with actors from said movies and TV shows. Of course I live across the country and can’t actually attend Comic-Con, but I enjoy seeing all the videos, interviews, trailers, and pictures that come out of the weekend.

LEGO, being a big part of nerd culture itself, of course had a presence at this major nerd event. TLG also has the advantage of owning licenses with the Marvel and DC universes, the two main draws of Comic-Con.

LEGO has had a presence at Comic-Con for many years now and has used the event to sell exclusive sets and minifigures just for con attendees.

This year’s exclusives included a preview of an upcoming line of collectibles called BrickHeadz. (Apparently there is an upcoming line of collectibles called BrickHeadz.) BrickHeadz won’t be released officially until next year, but these preview packs that include both DC and Marvel characters are awesome.

Batman and the Joker

Doctor Strange and Black Panther

Superman and Wonder Woman

Captain America and Iron Man

These packs were sold for $40. If you can’t tell, they are a set of bricks that can be built into some of your favorite comic book characters.

Cool stuff. I’m interested to see more from this line when it begins next year.

The other exclusives were two minifigures. One was Ray Palmer or A.T.O.M.. This character appeared on the DC TV shows Arrow and The Flash, before becoming one of the regular characters on The Legends of Tomorrow.

Here is A.T.O.M. with a removable helmet and a plate to stand on labeled with the Palmer Technologies logo. There’s a lot of great detail on the torso and legs and it really kinda looks like the actor that plays him, Brandon Routh:

The second minifigure exclusive was Captain America, but I believe it’s based on the newest comic book version of him where he is actually working with Hydra. (That bastard!) I guess that's why he looks so mean:

But wait! There’s more!

Also appearing at Comic-Con, but not exclusively were three upcoming LEGO sets.

They are a part of LEGO’s Super Heroes Mighty Micros line. The micro line is one which produces miny sets of super heros and villains with their vehicles.

Here Batman is with his Batcopter that he can use to chase after Killer Moth in his vehicle.

Wonder Woman comes with her invisible jet and goes up against Doomsday and his fiery vehicle.

Superman comes with his matching vehicle to face off against his mirror image enemy, Bizarro.

These sets, which are based on the classic incarnations of these comic book heroes, not the recent film versions will be available starting in January 2017 at $9.99 per set.

But the most important LEGO-related news to come out of San Diego for me was the newest trailer for The LEGO Batman Movie. It’s hilarious! I can’t wait to see this movie! We get to see the origins of LEGO Robin and a glimpse of The Joker. Check it out:

Looks like LEGO hit another one out of the park. The movie comes out on February 10, 2017.

And as a bonus, here is a video with highlights from The LEGO Batman Movie panel featuring the voice of Batman, Will Arnett and the director of the film, Chris McKay:

And that’s my San Diego Comic-Con round-up! What do you think of those exclusives? Are you mad you can’t get them? What do you think of BrickHeadz? And how pumped are you for The LEGO Batman Movie???

!!!!

Until next time my fellow nerds….check out this dress made with over 10,000 LEGO bricks that was worn by Star Wars: The Clone Wars voice actor Ashley Eckstein at Comic-Con:
